Known as potent workplace carcinogens, these substances are already subject to REACH authorisation \u2013 but could now face a general ban across the EU<sup data-fn=\"6b23658e-46e5-4f9d-a31a-affeae48a83f\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"6b23658e-46e5-4f9d-a31a-affeae48a83f-link\" href=\"#6b23658e-46e5-4f9d-a31a-affeae48a83f\">1<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For businesses involved in metal pre-treatment \u2013 particularly aluminium \u2013 this signals a fundamental regulatory shift. Some still rely on Cr(VI)-based processes, yet technically viable alternatives are already available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What the ECHA proposal includes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The draft regulation aims to prohibit most Cr(VI) uses, with only a few industrial exceptions. Affected categories include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Electroplating on metals or plastics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Formulation of mixtures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Primers and slurry coatings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other surface treatment processes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use as functional additives or processing aids<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Exceptions would be subject to strict occupational exposure and emission limits. The restriction also includes barium chromate, to prevent substitution loopholes. Tested, approved system complies with GSB International and Qualicoat standards. Successfully tested in long-term outdoor weathering conditions (&gt; 10 years).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-container-content-64aeeb98\"><strong>2000<\/strong> <br>Development of ENVIROX NR (No Rinse, Alficoat 748 \/ 748-3) \u2013 a water-saving, Cr-free pre-treatment requiring no final rinsing. Still one of the most widely used Cr-free systems worldwide for aluminium pre-treatment.Tested, approved system complies with GSB International and Qualicoat standards. Successfully tested in long-term outdoor weathering conditions (&gt; 10 years).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-container-content-64aeeb98\"><strong>2010<\/strong> <br>Introduction of ENVIROX SG (Alfipas 7816) \u2013 a zirconium-based sol-gel system for iron, steel, aluminium and zinc. Approved for Al pretreatment according to Qualicoat and GSB International.  Successfully tested in long-term outdoor weathering too (&gt;10 years).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Proven alternatives in industrial use<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/alufinish.de\/en\/envirox-nr\/\">ENVIROX NR system<\/a> (product Alficoat 748 resp. Alficoat 748\/3) was already developed at the end of the 90s, then tested and approved for applications on aluminium surfaces by renowned quality communities (Qualicoat, GSB International). It was even subjected to the 10-year outdoor weathering test specified by GSB International in Hoek van Holland \u2013 passing it successfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alficoat 748 (748\/3) provides outstanding corrosion protection prior to applying paint as well as improving the adhesion properties as a result of its polymer content. This \u201cno-rinse\u201d (NR) system has been in use in many countries mostly for projects in exterior architecture for more than 20 years. Additional fields of application are, e.g., mechanical engineering and medical technology.<sup data-fn=\"5e49abff-31d8-4814-aee1-c9257758743c\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"5e49abff-31d8-4814-aee1-c9257758743c-link\" href=\"#5e49abff-31d8-4814-aee1-c9257758743c\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use case: ELVIAL, Greece \u2013 chromium-free since 2000<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the earliest practical implementations of ENVIROX NR took place at ELVIAL, a major aluminium extruder in Greece. The first Cr-free Alufinish pre-treatment line went into operation there in 2000 using Alficoat 748\/3. In 2005, ELVIAL built a new vertical pre-treatment plant using flushing technology \u2013 fully based on chrome-free ENVIROX NR.<br>Since then, ENVIROX NR has treated thousands of tonnes of aluminium profiles worldwide, with consistently excellent surface quality. The system uses no final rinsing, requires low chemical input and is certified by quality communities.<br>Today, ELVIAL is regarded as one of a model for successful chromium-free large-scale production \u2013 combining advanced automation, energy efficiency and long-term performance.<sup data-fn=\"16f51ce5-74a3-4bf6-a1e2-debbeede17e9\" class=\"fn\"><a id=\"16f51ce5-74a3-4bf6-a1e2-debbeede17e9-link\" href=\"#16f51ce5-74a3-4bf6-a1e2-debbeede17e9\">4<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201eAfter 13 years of operation, the chromium-free ENVIROX NR process is fully established in the vertical line at ELVIAL and provides the consistently high level of surface quality demanded by customers.\u201c<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>(Thomas Sondermann, Alufinish, 2018)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From regulation to solution: Ready-made options instead of uncertainty<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The proposed restriction underlines that hexavalent chromium will soon disappear from most industrial applications.
